Fact-Checking Policy

Media Grid UK is operated by Sliema Media Limited (registered in Malta, company number C 84217, registered office Level 3, Tower Business Centre, Tower Street, Swatar, Birkirkara BKR 4013, Malta) and published under the editorial authority of Editor‑in‑Chief Jonathan Pierce. The ultimate responsibility for all fact‑checking procedures lies with him and with Oliver Reeves, the Standards & Fact‑Checking Lead, who reviews sensitive articles before publication and oversees the correction system. This policy explains what we verify, how we verify it, and how readers can alert us to errors.

Who is responsible for fact‑checking at Media Grid UK?

Oliver Reeves, our Standards & Fact‑Checking Lead (oliver.reeves@mediagriduk.uk), is the named editor who supervises all verification processes. He reviews articles that involve disputed claims, confidential sources, or potential reputational harm before they are published. The Editor‑in‑Chief, Jonathan Pierce, retains final authority over editorial standards, publication decisions and corrections. Day‑to‑day fact‑checking is carried out by the journalist who writes the piece and is then reviewed by a dedicated editor from the newsroom.

Every article carries a named writer and a named editor. No piece is published without at least one editorial review that includes a check on factual accuracy, source reliability and correct attribution.

What does Media Grid UK verify before publication?

We verify all claims that are central to a story, including statistics, direct quotes, named individuals, dates, locations and legal assertions. Each claim is traced to an original source wherever possible. Our source hierarchy – detailed on the Sources & Standards page – prioritises primary documents, official records, on‑the‑record interviews and authoritative databases, then moves to reputable secondary sources, and finally treats anonymous or contested information with explicit caveats.

Commercial data, market figures and financial numbers are cross‑checked against the relevant regulator or company filing. Public‑interest stories involving government policy, public spending or legal rulings are reviewed by the Politics & Public Affairs Editor, Thomas Grant, before publication. Where a source cannot be independently confirmed, we state the limitation clearly in the text.

How are unverified rumours and speculation handled?

Any rumour, allegation or speculative claim that cannot be verified through our source hierarchy is clearly labelled as such, using terms like ‘unverified’, ‘alleged’ or ‘reported by others’ – never presented as fact. Sensitive articles that touch on national security, criminal accusations or individual reputation are flagged to Oliver Reeves for pre‑publication review.

If a rumour is widely circulating but lacks credible sourcing, we may report on the fact that it is circulating, but we will not amplify it without attribution and a clear warning to readers. All such material is accompanied by a link to our Editorial Policy, which governs editorial judgment on unconfirmed information.

How can readers report a potential error?

Readers who spot a mistake or a missing source can email the fact‑checking team directly at factcheck@mediagriduk.uk. We also accept reports via the general contact address info@mediagriduk.uk. Every report is acknowledged within two working days and assessed by Oliver Reeves or a deputy. If an error is confirmed, we publish a correction as quickly as possible and update the article.

Our full Corrections Policy explains how corrections are classified, labelled and logged. Readers can also find details of our editorial team on the Our Team page and can contact any editor directly with questions about a specific piece of journalism.

Our commitments

  • Every factual claim in an article is supported by a verifiable source, and the source is attributed unless clear editorial reasons require confidentiality.
  • All articles are reviewed by at least one editor before publication, and sensitive or high‑impact stories receive an additional check from the Standards & Fact‑Checking Lead.
  • Corrections are issued promptly, prominently displayed in the updated article, and logged permanently in a corrections archive.
  • Commercial relationships (advertising, affiliate links, sponsored content) never influence fact‑checking decisions, and all sponsored material is clearly labelled.
  • We welcome and act on reader reports of inaccuracies, and we publish a clear complaints procedure so that any unresolved concern can be escalated to the Editor‑in‑Chief or to an independent reviewer.
